If you’ve ever felt frustrated by your lack of progress, you’re not alone.
Many people work hard, show up consistently and genuinely want to improve their health, but they’re held back by beliefs that simply aren’t true.
The fitness industry is full of myths that can leave people feeling confused, overwhelmed and unsure where to start.
Let’s look at five of the most common myths we hear at Infinite Change Fitness—and what you should focus on instead.
Myth #1: I Need to Get Fit Before I Join a Gym
This is one of the most common things we hear.
“I’ll join when I’ve lost a bit of weight.”
“I’ll start when I’m fitter.”
“I need to get into shape first.”
Think about that for a moment.
Would you wait until your teeth were healthy before visiting a dentist?
Would you wait until your car was fixed before taking it to a mechanic?
Of course not.
Gyms exist to help people become fitter, stronger and healthier.
You don’t need to arrive in shape. You simply need to arrive.
Many of our members hadn’t exercised consistently for years before joining. Some had never stepped foot in a gym before.
The important thing isn’t where you start. It’s that you start.
Myth #2: Cardio Is Best for Weight Loss
Cardio certainly has benefits.
Walking, cycling, swimming and running can all improve cardiovascular health and help increase calorie expenditure.
However, many people spend hours doing cardio while completely neglecting strength training.
The problem?
When you lose weight without strength training, you risk losing muscle as well as body fat.
Strength training helps preserve and build muscle, which supports metabolism, improves body composition and helps create the toned look many people are aiming for.
The best approach is usually a combination of regular movement, sensible nutrition and structured strength training.
Myth #3: I’m Too Old to Start Strength Training
This couldn’t be further from the truth.
In fact, strength training becomes more important as we get older.
From around the age of 30, we naturally begin to lose muscle mass unless we actively work to maintain it.
Strength training helps:
- Maintain muscle mass
- Improve balance
- Support bone health
- Reduce the risk of falls
- Improve everyday function
- Increase confidence
We’ve seen members in their 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond achieve incredible results after deciding to start.
Your age isn’t the problem.
Doing nothing is.
Myth #4: I Need to Train Every Day to Get Results
Social media can make it seem as though successful people spend hours in the gym every day.
The reality is very different.
Results come from consistency, not obsession.
For most people, three or four quality sessions each week are more than enough to build strength, improve fitness and support weight loss.
Trying to do too much often leads to burnout, injury or simply giving up altogether.
A sustainable routine will always outperform an extreme one.
Myth #5: If I’m Not Sore, The Workout Didn’t Work
Many people use soreness as a measure of success.
If they can’t walk properly the next day, they assume they’ve had a great workout.
In reality, soreness simply means your body is adapting to a new stimulus.
You can have an excellent training session and experience very little soreness.
Better measures of progress include:
- Getting stronger
- Improving technique
- Lifting more weight
- Completing more repetitions
- Recovering more quickly
- Feeling more energetic
The goal isn’t to feel broken after every workout.
The goal is to become stronger, healthier and more capable over time.
The Bottom Line
Fitness doesn’t have to be complicated.
Unfortunately, myths and misinformation often stop people from taking action or cause them to focus on the wrong things.
You don’t need to get fit before joining a gym.
You don’t need to spend hours on cardio.
You aren’t too old.
You don’t need to train every day.
And you definitely don’t need to be sore after every workout.
What you do need is a structured plan, expert guidance and the consistency to keep showing up.
